Overview
This feature introduces an email confirmation step during the gift card claim process to ensure that only the intended recipient gains access to the code. When selecting a gift card, the user will be asked to confirm the email address to which the code will be delivered. Subsequently, a separate email containing the link to the code will be sent to that email address, ensuring that only the person with access to that email can access the code. Without access to that specific inbox, the code remains secure unless the recipient intentionally shares it.
Why are we doing this?
Previously, once a gift card was redeemed, anyone with access to the original link could view the code. This created a situation where users could potentially access and use the code before the intended recipient, leading to various issues. Customers reported instances where gift cards were not working at stores, despite no apparent faults, and some customers became suspicious of their own users intercepting codes.
We aim to ensure that the gift card code is accessible only to the intended recipient, providing an additional layer of security for our clients and recipients.
How does it work?
When sending via email:
- During the gift card selection step, before generating the code, the user must check a checkbox confirming that the listed email address is correct and accessible.
- This email address cannot be changed. This ensures that the person selecting the code is aware that they must have access to the listed inbox to retrieve the code.
- A new email containing a link to the code is sent only to the confirmed email address, preventing anyone else from intercepting the code.
When sending via link:
- The process is similar, but instead of a pre-listed email address, there is a text box to enter the email address along with a checkbox to confirm.
- Following this, the same steps occur to receive a private email with the link to the code.
- This creates a paper trail, allowing clients to identify any suspicious activity, and deters users from attempting to redirect codes to unauthorized addresses.
With these measures in place, we can ensure that the intended recipient is the only one who can access the code for email sends. For link sends, we can track and deter any misuse, providing a secure and reliable experience for all users.
Please note: part of this update means that the sender will no longer receive a copy of the gift card email in bcc. This previously acted as a confirmation of the send, however, this will no longer occur. In order to confirm, like for all other sends, you simply can check the status in the sends tab and if it has turned to 'sent' then the email has gone out.
