What is an Item Family?
Item Families are a way to better organize your inventory within the items tab. By assigning a SKU to an Item Family, it will group them together for easier viewing, condensed into 1 row which is expandable and collapsible to view the individual SKU's it contains. The Family is a collective name for these items, within the Family are the actual SKU's which have their slight differences.
For example:
In your inventory you have a Branded T-Shirt, but this T-Shirt comes in Small, Medium, Large & Extra Large, these could also come in multiple colors. Instead of these being viewed as completely separate and unrelated items, once added to an Item Family they are grouped together under 1 row, you can then expand this row to view each size and colour.
How to setup an Item Family & assigned SKU's to it?
Step 1: Download the "Bulk edit items" CSV
- Go to the "Items" tab within the "Inventory" section under "Warehousing"
- On the right hand side of the table, click on the 3 vertical dots then on "Bulk edit items"
- This will open a modal, from here click on "Download CSV". This will export all of your SKU's into a CSV
Step 2: Edit the CSV to create Item Families and assign relevant SKU's
- Open the CSV and make edits. In the CSV you will find 3 columns:
- SKU
- Name
- Item Family
- DO NOT edit the SKU
- You are able to edit the name if you would like to make any changes
- For the Item Family column, this is where you create, assign, edit and remove Item Families
- Type the Item Family name in the row of the SKU's you would like it to live under
- Make sure to find and give all related SKU's the same Item Family name
- When using assigning multiple SKU's to an Item Family, make sure that the spelling, cases and white spaces are exactly the same. Any differences will create a new Item Family
- You can have many Item Families, but a SKU can only be associated with 1
- By leaving an Item Family blank it simply means that SKU will not be associated with an Item Family
- Save and download your CSV
Step 3: Upload the edited CSV back into the platform
- Upload that CSV back into the modal and click "Upload
- The process will begin in the background. This may take a few minutes depending on how many SKU's you are updating and how many Item Families you are creating
- A toast will pop up in the bottom right of the screen letting you know the upload was successful and that you will get an email once it is complete
- Once you receive the email, visit or refresh the items page and you will now be able to see your Item Families!
